Who's behind Octane

Evan Sparkman — Founder & Lead Engineer

Evan Sparkman, founder and lead engineer at Octane Labs

15+ years shipping production software, 13+ of them on Rails. When you hire Octane, I build it — one senior engineer who scopes it, writes it, and talks to you directly. No subcontractor bench, no account manager between you and the code. I also build and run my own products — ContractorLink, BeanLink, and TrackWright — and I built Wildcat Off Road Park's platform and manage its infrastructure to this day. I build like someone who operates what he ships, because I do — so I think about what your software has to earn, not just whether it runs.

Why Octane exists

Too many agencies staff your project with a bench and hand it back at the finish line. Octane works the opposite way: one senior engineer scopes it, writes it, and talks to you directly — no handoff, no account manager relaying between you and the code.

I hold client work to the same standard I hold my own products to. ContractorLink, BeanLink, and TrackWright are software I depend on for my own businesses — being on the pager for those is what makes me build yours to hold up.

How I work

Rails is my default for new builds — 13+ years in, I know where it saves you time and where it bites. When another stack fits the job better, I use it — Mountain Gap Coffee, a business I run separately from Octane, is built on Shopify.

Wildcat Off Road Park is a longtime client: I built its platform and manage its infrastructure to this day, while the park runs its own reservations on top of it. Ongoing operation like that is an option, not the default — most engagements end with software you own and any Rails team can run.

Tell me what you're building.

The person who reads it is the one who'd build it.
